Bodington is an open source Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which was originated at the University of Leeds by Jon Maber. It is now developed actively at the University of Oxford and the University of Highlands and Islands.
With its 2.8.0 release Bodington has moved to an OSI-certified licence, Apache v2.0. http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=618944
Bodington's distinctive features are
- it is written in Java and runs as a servlet under eg Tomcat
- it uses a relational database backing store
- it models university buildings and departments and groups, rather than courses, which makes it very suitable for places like Oxford which does not deal in formal course units.
- has very good accessibility
You can try a running Bodington system on the OSS Watch live Linux CD (see Knoppix).
