Why does OSS Watch require me to register in order to add or edit content on the OSS Watch wiki?

OSS Watch asks you to register in order to add or edit content on the OSS Watch wiki solely to avoid the growing phenomenon of wiki spam. This is a very annoying problem. Read more about wiki, and related, link spam at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog_spam
